Mini-review: Permission to Feel

Civilized Creature has treated us with a second free album in this year, and it’s probably his best yet. Civilized Creature’s sound has developed and matured dramatically since last year’s Beast of Formalities EP, and Permission to Feel continues on that track. The latest from Ryan J. Lane is home to his fullest sound textures and arrangements yet alongside his most lyrics-focused outing as Civilized Creature. The eight songs from Permission to Feel leans towards rap and folk styles while still paying tribute to the ambient tones of A New Heart and the electronic base of Beast of Formalities. Interestingly enough, the combination works because it feels authentic. Lane doesn’t send the impression that he’s trying to be someone else. Civilized Creature operates from its own unique identity, and that is its greatest strength.
