Song Highlight: “Closing Time” by Semisonic

Readers of this site will by now know A Diverse Sound is a place where I talk about anything and everything relating to music. There’s no rhyme or reason to it, just a guy who loves sharing what he’s hearing. With that said, allow me to introduce a new segment where I simply highlight great songs I’m currently listening to. Whether it is singles, forgotten gems, or random tunes I’m really digging, you’ll find them here. The first song on I want to touch on is the 98 smash single “Closing Time” by Semisonic.

Anyone who grew up listening to music in the 1990s will have undoubtedly heard this song in one form or another. For me, that was the radio. The unmistakable piano melody and the lyrics that told a metaphorical story of the everyday man finishing his job for the day and waiting for his lover to take him home. It was the song to teach us that “Every new beginning comes from some other beginning’s end.” Even if a season of our lives comes to a close, a new one with even more possibilities and wonders will always open.

Musically, it’s one of my favourite compositions of all time. As mentioned, the melody is iconic and the chorus explodes with genuine energy and momentum. Unlike the mind numbing EDM drops prevalent in many mainstream singles today, “Closing Time” was a gentle rocker that both lifted the spirits and laid them to rest.

It’s a shame Semisonic aren’t really known outside this song because their albums are actually quite good. Even so, “Closing Time” is a song whose lights aren’t going out anytime soon.

  1. Yeah, this one’s a veritable classic and a distilled statement of where pop-rock was in that era. One of my favorite coffee shops blares this song if they don’t have the chance to personally tell all the patrons that they’re shutting down soon. It’s hilarious.
